Green School's News

 Here at St. Michael's we are a very proud Green School.  We've already obtained our Waste Flag, Our Energy Flag, Our Water Flag, our Travel Flag

and most recently Our Biodiversity Flag.  You will see five green flags blowing proudly in the wind. These flags were awarded by An Taisce for our efforts in recycling, reducing our energy consumption and the amount of water that we use. In 2021, we celebrated the success of gaining our Travel Flag.  We were very excited to have been chosen to have the front of our school as a 'School Zone', under the 'Safe Routes to School Programme' . We now have pencil bollards, ramps, pedrestrian crossing and traffic lights at the front of our school.  These aim to raise awareness among roads users that they're entering school environment & to reduce their speed.  

We got our first Green Flag-Waste Flag in 2015, followed by our 2nd Green Waste- Energy in 2017.  In 2019, we got the Green Flag -Water, our 4th Green Flag-Travel in June 2021 and most recently we obtained our Biodiversity Flag in May 2023.  From 2023-2025 we aim to gain our 6th Green Flag on Global Citizenship for Litter and Waste.

As a Green School, we thrive to help create a healthy environment conducive to learning, while reducing waste, learning about reusing and recycling, saving energy and water and in turn we're helping our BOM save money.  We care deeply about environmental issues, and wish to make a positive change to the environment around us. The Green-Schools programme provides an ideal way for fostering environmental awareness into the lives of all of us here at St. Michael's.
