What a week!! (Active School Week 2016)

The children of St. Michael's have a well earned break this bank holiday weekend after their first Active School week from April 25th - 29th. The week was a massive success with all staff and children on board to try out all the activities.

We started last Monday with Active Yard where all the children and staff participated in yard games together ably led by the Active Yard Leaders.

During the rest of the week, a range of activities were offered from dance to gymnastics. It was a delight to watch the children get fitter and gain new skills.

On Thursday Mr. Peadar Farrelly came in to do a GAA skills workshop with the children in all classes. So hopefully over the summer we will see our children try out their newly acquired skills on the gaelic fields of Co. Monaghan. We greatly appreciate the time given by Peadar to come in and help us out during Acive Week.

Finally on Friday, we rounded off the week with our mile run/walk and then our healthy fruit snack.

It was amazing to see the determination and enthusiasm of the children as they completed no less than 10 laps of the school yard/ field to total 1 mile. The fitness levels have soared over the past months and all teachers report that children are working and concentrating better in class as a result. This shows us that even a small increase in our physical activity can have huge benefits. We are so proud of you all!!

Afterwards, in the school hall the children got to sample a range of fruits from apples, bananas, oranges, melon, pineapple, blueberries etc all topped off with a dollop of natural yoghurt. This was enjoyed by all and again it was lovely to see children trying out fruits they hadn't tried before. We must sincerely thank our active school committee for helping to serve out the fruit and also clean up afterwards.

Our aim now is to continue our running and keep building on our fitness levels. We hope that this is the first of many more Active Weeks to come.
