Small Schools Athletics, The Peace Link, Clones, May 29th 2017
Congratulations and well done to all the children who took part in the small schools athletics competition on Monday the 29th of May in The Peace Link, Clones. Everyone had great runs and it was enjoyed by all. Some children opted for short sprint races of 80m or 100m while others did longer runs of 600m or 800m. A big thank you to the parents who brought their children to Clones on the night.
Runners were: Tom Doherty, Alexander Berry, Eva Mc Nelis, Tristan Keelan, Eoghan Farrell, Bridie Smyth, Caitlin Gilsenan, Seamus Smyth, Sarah-Jane Gilsenan, Rachel Mc Entee, Neasa Doherty and Conal Mc Nelis.
 
 
Local Area Athletics Finals
Last Monday night the 22nd of May, the Community Games area athletics finals took place in Threemilehouse. There was a great turn-out from St. Michael's and everyone gave a good account of themselves. Pictured below are some of the children that took part.
 
 
The 10th Anniversary Blackwater 10k and 5k fun run
Last Sunday the 21st of May, the Blackwater race took place in Rossmore Park, Monaghan. Well done to Katie Treanor from Senior Infants who took part in the 5k fun run with her parents. Katie is pictured below with her commemorative medal.
 
 
Spring League Finals weekend
Congratulations to all our pupils who played in the U12 spring league finals last Saturday,  April 29th with local clubs, Sean McDermotts, Monaghan Harps, Drumhowan, Aghabog and Rockcorry. Children involved were Dervla Greenan, Pete Mc Guirk, Oisin Mc Phillips, Matthew Mc Guinness, Daithi Treanor, Tom Doherty, Martin Gilbert, Daniel Boyd, Aaron Brabazon, Tristan Keelan and Morgan Coyle.
 
Active Yard Leaders
A new month kicked off last Friday with 5 new leaders on active duty. Well done to Louise Mc Elvaney who played "keep it up" with the rackets and balls, to Conan Mc Mullan who played "ship, shore and sea", to Pete Mc Guirk who did the "cross-bar challenge", to Emily Mc Elvaney who did a quoit relay and to Alexander Berry who did a very active obstacle course (pictured below)

Inter-Schools Swimming Gala
Congratulations to Bridie Smyth and Tom Doherty who recently represented the school at the inter-schools gala at Coral Leisure in Monaghan on March 18th last. Well done to both on great swims.
 
Active School Week 2017
An excellent week was had by all in St. Michael's this week as we held our second Active School Week. Each day was packed full of activity and all the children had great fun getting involved. 
On Monday, we kicked off the week with Tag Rugby. We invited in Daniel McGregor from Monaghan Rugby Club to give us a taster of this game that most children hadn't played before. We all agreed that it was a fun game and some expressed an interest in maybe giving rugby a go next winter.
On Tuesday, Mr. Enda Timoney came in and did a fantastic session with all classes where the children in the senior room had to assemble 5 tents correctly by following the instructions and working in a team. The junior room then got to play some games in and around the tents and then it was left to the middle room to take down and pack away the tents again. This was a very educational and active session where the children gained some valuable life skills.
On Wednesday, our friend Sharon from Coral Leisure Centre, Monaghan came in and did a great circuits class with each room. This was enjoyed by all. Later that day, the Active School Committee put their knowledge to the test by setting up and leading us in a whole school circuits class out in the yard.
On Thursday, Rosita came in and did some dance moves with us which the children really enjoyed. At 12:00 that day we did our first "Walk the Earth" walk by walking around the perimeter of the school 7 times which equates to 1km for each child which is a total of 65km.
On Friday, we finished off the week with a trip to Peace Link in Clones. The coaches there provided great sessions in long jump, turbo-javelin throwing, team building activities and athletics on the track. The children returned to school exhausted after all their exertions. Upon returning to school, a healthy snack of fruit was provided by Active School Committee in the staff room. 
 
 
As part of our St Patrick's Day activtes we organised some fun activities in the hall. The children  had great fun playing The Irish Hot Potato, Lucky's Three in  a Row,  The Shamrock Blowing Competition and Irish Jig (musical statues). 
 
Primary Schools' Cross Country Competition
On Wednesday, March 8th a team of runners went to the cross country competition in Corracrin N.S. The race was run over a gruelling and testing 1 km course with very muddy conditions underfoot. The team did very well and although we didn't capture a team prize, we managed to land silver in the individual race with Tom Doherty coming in second place. Well done to everyone who completed the training in the run-up to the event and on completing the race on the day. Team was as follows: Bridie Smyth, Dervla Greenan, Hannah McCabe, Caitlin Gilsenan, Pete McGuirk, Michael Staunton, Tom Doherty, Ciaran Maguire, Owen McGuirk, Morgan Coyle, Daniel Boyd, Tristan Keelan.
 
                                                   
Operation Transformation 10@10
On Friday, February 10th, everyone took part in one big school circuit out in the school yard. Active committee leaders were station leaders and were ably assisted by the teachers. Christmas Themed Active Day

On Tuesday, December 20th, all classes took part in activities with a Christmas theme. Unfortunately due to bad weather we had to remain in the hall for these activities. Everyone had great fun while being active and each class had the chance to compete with another class to complete the task. Junior and senior infants had to hang their santa hats on a clothes line in a relay race, first and second class had to throw as many newspaper snowballs as they could in a given time, third and fourth class had to match the christmas cards that were scattered around the hall and fifth and sixth class had to collect up the letters and solve the puzzle. Everyone enjoyed themselves and  were glad to have an energetic break inspite of the bad weather. See gallery for all the photos of the day.

GAA Skills Competition, Cloghan. November 30th 2016

Well done to Ciaran Maguire, Daithi Treanor, Morgan Coyle and Tom Doherty who represented St. Michael's N.S. at an all-county skills competition held in Cloghan on Nov. 30th. It was a very foggy and cold day but despite the bad weather, the boys gave a good account of themselves and finished up in 4th place out of 20 schools. The skills involved on the day were kicking accuracy into a marked zone, scoring accuracy using both weak and strong foot, a rounders type game testing kicking and fielding of the ball and finally a 5v5 game. Well done to all involved.

New storeroom for new equipment 

We have received a delivery of new pe equipment lately. The new equipment includes basketballs, footballs, bibs, badminton rackets, volleyballs etc. The committee thought it was best to clean out an existing storeroom and keep this equipment for pe classes only. The cleaning of the storeroom has taken place and the "after" photos will follow shortly. Please see "before" photo below. Thanks to Mr. Baxter and active school committee members who helped in the cleaning and blowing up of the new balls.

 

 

Thanks to Coral Leisure, Monaghan

Just a word of thanks to Sharon from Coral Leisure, Monaghan who provided 5 weeks of coaching in soccer, games, basketball and gaelic football. The coaching was enjoyed by all. See gallery for photos of the different activities.

 

 

Halloween Funday

On the day of the halloween holidays, October 28th, we had fun activities with a halloween theme in the yard . The committee got together and came up with ideas for competitive games for the classes. Junior and Senior infants had a pumpkin relay where the children had to run with a squeaky pumpkin between their knees. First and second class had a broom relay. Third and fourth class had to wrap a mummy in toilet paper and fifth and sixth class had to collect up all the skeleton pieces and reassemble it in the right way-this proved a difficult task as the first job was to find all the pieces that were scattered around the big yard. See pictures below of a fun-filled day of activity.

Motto Competition

All entries are now in for our Active Schools Motto. The Active Committee will judge entries during the week and the big announcement will be made at the school assembly on Friday Oct. 28th. Watch this space for results.

Maths week Oct. 17-21st

Second, third and fourth class competed with each other in a very active maths trail during the week. Not alone were the children showing off their maths expertise but they were getting fit and climbing mountains at the same time!

All the classes, Ms. Quinn, Ms. Mc Phillips and Mrs. Doherty skipped together for about half an hour to climb the highest peaks in Europe. So far, we have climbed the highest peaks in Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta and The Netherlands. A grand total of 781 skips were achieved and it is hoped to go all the way and climb the highest peak in Europe which is Mt. Blanc in France ( 4810m )

1 skip= 1metre.

 

P.E. Homework

The children have taken to the P.E homework very well. Most are not only doing the homework on one day a week, as required, but on all four homework days such is the enthusiasm for getting fit and healthy. The active committee went around all the classrooms and demonstrated each exercise to the children before the homework was sent home. An explanatory note was also sent home.

 

Active School Committee meeting 6/10/2016

Our third meeting of the new school year was a very busy and active one. We discussed the beginning of Active Yard for the first time this year on Oct 7th 2016. We talked about our new P.E. homework schedule and the new active schools motto competition. We took delivery of new sports equipment during the week and we hope to open, log and store this equipment in the coming days.

St. Michael's students out and about at the weekend- 1/2 October

Well done to some of our pupils involved in sporting events over the weekend.

Congratulations to Eoghan Farrell, Aaron Brabazon, Oisin McPhillips, Daniel Boyd, Tristan Keelan, Tom Doherty and Matthew McGuinness who all attended an U-10 tournament held at Monaghan Harps GFC on Sat. Oct. 1st. Seans and Drumhowan made it to the shield final with Drumhowan narrowly shading the victory. Well done boys!

Well done to Hannah McCabe who was on the girls U-12 winning team who beat Tyholland in the final last weekend too. Congratulations Hannah!

Finally, well done to Pete Mc Guirk who took part in a 6th class Gaelic football blitz which was held in Castleblayney last weekend too. Great work everyone!

#Be Active Schools Campaign 2016

What a week of activity we are after having in St. Michael's. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the activities during the week.

 We kicked the week off with Move -it-Monday. All classes took part in circuits to music in the hall or in the yard.

On Tuesday, the challenge was to try a new sport on the yard, and I can now confirm that skipping is the new fashion in St. Michael's. 

On Wednesday, We walked it out with a smile on our faces. We enjoyed the fresh air and caught up on the news with our friends.

On Thursday, class rivalry came into play when classes challenged each other in various activities.

On Friday, we finished the week with the "Take on the Teachers" challenge where the Active Schools Committee took on the teachers in the Water Race. After a valiant effort, the committee were just pipped at the post by the teachers.
